Uasin Gishu MCAs Raise Concern over Matatu Menace in Eldoret Town

The Members of County Assembly of Uasin Gishu have added their voice concerning the out hand situation created by the upsurge of matatus parking and picking passengers all over Eldoret Town. The Leader of Minority Hon. Ramadan Ali, MCA Kiplombe Ward tabled a Motion in which the County Government of Uasin Gishu is urged to intervene and address the menace as to streamline the establishment of bus stages on undesignated areas.

Ali observed that in the recent past there has been rampant establishment of bus stages of bus stages in undesignated zones within Eldoret town and its suburbs. He said that the establishment of such stages has been done haphazardly and has led to increase in traffic jams that witnessed almost daily in the Central Business District (CBD) of the town. He added that if the trend continues it might lead to a total collapse of traffic management and control within the CBD.

The Motion was seconded by Hon. Francis Muya MCA Langas Ward who regretted that Eldoret is a known town in Kenya in terms of development and planning but the current disorder in its transport sector is a complete let down. He observed that the current confusion in the transport sector in the town meant there was a lot of laxity in persons responsible especially the Departments of Trade and Roads, Transport and Infrastructure.

Muya said that the matte crew are harassing pedestrians and other road users as they compete along the main busy roads to pick and drop passengers. He added that it is now easier to manage the matatus through Saccos but regretted that it has not been that way due to some corrupt County Officers who have been allowing the matte crew to rule the town.

While contributing to the Motion, Hon. Daniel Sanga MCA Moi’s Bridge Ward said that it is becoming a norm for matatus to pick passengers on the busy Uganda road which must be stopped. He added that the boda boda riders have also been sucked into the confusion as their parking spaces have been invaded by matatus forcing them also to start picking and dropping their passengers at unofficial points.
